October 2018 - Colobus at Elsamere

About the Image(s)

In my early childhood my father took me to watch the movie "Born Free" - the famous story of Elsa. Being dad I am proud to give my daughter an opportunity to visit Elsamere, Naivasha. This museum depicts the life of George and Jay Adamson and their commitment to the wildlife. The back of the cottage there is a lush and beautiful garden with a view of Lake Naivasha. There we found black-and-white colossuses monkeys that are native to Africa. They were very playful jumping around the trees, sometime coming close for better photography. When I was leaving the parking lot I found this guy seating on the top of our tour vehicle. I got enough time to take his picture along with this close-up.
I don't have to do much to make this picture black & white as the main subject is black & white.

Direct eye contact, soft light, and simplicity of framing create a powerful portrait. Available light left the eyes a little dull, in Lightroom I brushed in some positive exposure to brighten them.   Posted: 10/16/2018 14:17:37

Thanks for the update. Eyes came out pretty lively.   Posted: 10/26/2018 10:01:29

Lovely image telling a good story. It really draws you in to see what the animal is thinking. Allen added what I would have suggested to finish this. Great job!   Posted: 10/16/2018 16:02:42

I enjoy the way you tell a story to give background to your images. It takes us all along on the journey, if just for a brief moment. I don't have time at the moment to edit your image but if I did I would tone down the background highlights and lighten the white in his coat just to seperate the side of his face and chin from the background. It looks like you took this shot with a long lens as the bokeh is lovely.   Posted: 10/26/2018 06:09:34

You captured a very interesting portrait that I found very pleasing. As suggested earlier, I also would have brightened the eyes, but also increase the brightness and detail in the area of the eyes. Additionally I thought some of the facial hair could be brightened and sharpened, and a slight gradient could be added to the left border to tone down the brightness and the overall tone adjusted for less contrast.

Since I have difficulty imagining without doing, I took liberties with your image. Do you consider it an improvement or not?

I like the image but not the very bright area behind the subject. So I darkened the background but also brightened the face and especially the eyes. Then I cropped the image - perhaps too much.   Posted: 10/28/2018 08:10:26
