About the Image(s)

One of my favorite landscape images was captured several years ago (2008) on a trip to Bar Harbor, Maine when I was able to capture the morning fog over a pond. I like the depth of field that the fog amplifies.

Since there is so little contrast and color, I always wondered how it would come out in B&W, so this month I thought I would try it and get your comments.

Taken with a Canon 40D with a 28-300mm zoom lens set at 41mm, 1/15 sec, f/25 at ISO 800.

For me, this is really a blend of 2 distinct images. The lower portion is a lovely minimalist study of the grass in the water, while the upper portion sets a foggy morning tone where there is a softening of the edges. To demonstrate:   Posted: 01/21/2018 14:02:35

Thanks for your input, Tom. This wasn't a comment that I was expecting! I see your point that they could be two separate images and stand on their own. Thanks.

Interesting choices. Clicking through images on a screen, I would prefer Tom's separated version. But in a print the larger image would be more inviting to linger over and enjoy the depth you captured in this scene. In both versions the BWvesion is more powerful than the muted colors.   Posted: 01/24/2018 13:19:00

Thanks, Allen. I really have a hard time deciding between the color and B&W. I DO like the single image over the two separate ones as it highlights the fog in the background as it contrasts with the sharpness of the foreground.

Jim, I definitely prefer single picture with lake ,fog and grasses.
However I see Tom's point. Grasses occupy a lot of space and compete for attention with distant scene.
What about cropping part of the grasses , would help?
I was trying also square image.   Posted: 01/26/2018 19:47:22

Some good ideas, Maria.
In reality, with perfect 20/20 hindsight, I should have gotten closer to the ground to dimish some of the open water. Live and learn.

I like Tom's suggestion of creating two images. I created my own image but include some of the grasses and also cropped some off both sides.   Posted: 01/27/2018 14:03:27

Thanks, Jim. I like your crop and it is similar to what Marie was trying.

Evidently, it is a very flexible image ;-) with something for everyone.
