Gothic Dream by Carrie Hannigan

May 2022 - Gothic Dream

About the Image(s)

Taken with Canon EOS 70D at 1/250 sec at f/10, 22mm. This one had some compositing work done beyond dodging/burning, curves, warming filter, gradient map, color lookup layer, and vignette. I removed a building crowding a corner, replaced the sky, and added all the birds. The original was taken on a bright day with wispy clouds in a blue sky, but I wanted more of a gothic look, having been inspired by a Edgar Allan Poe quote: "All that we see or seem is but a dream within a dream."

Another image with lots of fixes to create the final product. It is very nice and does have the look. The birds are a nice touch.   Posted: 05/18/2022 16:02:05

I definitely does create a mood, and I like it a lot. I don't care for the leaning in of the building on both sides of the image. It would be fun if you could place a person, maybe a "ghost", in one of the upper windows.   Posted: 05/18/2022 18:28:16

You've captured the mood you were looking for - I'm curious as to your position when you took the photo. It appears that you were not shooting from the center of the subject - was that intentional? I'd like to see that same photo taken on a cloudy day with a naturally ominous sky. Hopefully you live nearby and can return to take more photos of this interesting building.   Posted: 05/20/2022 08:48:36

Thanks for the feedback! The church is in Austria, and I live in Chicago. It was a one-time situation. Where I stood to take the photo was also the only place to stand and get the whole church, without all the stuff on the sides of it or standing in the grass (which wasn't clear whether they'd be okay with that).   Posted: 05/26/2022 14:27:38

Seeing is not believing. Nice job. I don't mind the building being off center; I'm not sure about the building's leaning back.   Posted: 05/21/2022 16:26:04

You definitely evoke the mood of a Gothic Dream in this photo. The common color palette for sky and church front strengthens the image. The leaning of the building due to perspective doesn't bother me; I feel it adds to the impact of the image. Well-done!   Posted: 05/24/2022 16:08:43

I didn't notice the leaning of the building until it was pointed out here. I suspect it was my wide-angle lens and my position (which was the only place I could stand). It's certainly something to look for in the future and make sure it's more intentional than accidental.   Posted: 05/26/2022 14:29:11
