About the Image(s)

Shot with my Canon 5D Mark III, Sigma 50mm 1.4 lens + Canon 500D, 1/60 sec, f 2.0, ISO 200. Stack of 12 “ so only the center of the flower is in focus. Cropped to make it off-center. Towards the beginning of lockdown, I did a few selective focus stacks like this. My wife doesn’t like the image too much. I love it. What do you think?

Doug, I like your image, but I don't know if F2 was the correct F stop to use with this image. You have some out of focus areas, especially on the right side of the image that are distracting. Perhaps other members of our group could suggest how you could improve it. I find selective focus to be a little challenging.

Hi Doug, Yes, I probably would have used a slightly higher F-stop - maybe 5.6 - and had a bit more of the image in focus. I think it's your choice how much you want in focus and how much you want out of focus; when I do these kinds of images I take multiple shots with different F-stops and take the one that appeals to me most ! But I think your exposure is good and I like that the center of the flower is sharp. Good composition, too.   Posted: 09/16/2020 01:39:17

The whole point of this image was to have as quick and total drop off in focus as possible -- sort of a Lensbaby effect. I actually tried one at F1.4, but however good that lens is at higher F stops, it was too out of focus at F1.4.   Posted: 09/16/2020 10:47:56
