Tundra Swans at Sunset by Donna Sturla

January 2020 - Tundra Swans at Sunset

About the Image(s)

Every year the rice fields above Sacramento are flooded, attracting Tundra Swans, geese, ducks, etc. I took this image from my car window (to not scare off the swans). It was a gorgeous sunset, and the swans are magnificent !
Nikon D7000, lens 150-500mm. Shot at 500mm, F8, 1/8000 sec., and my exposure compensation was at -3. Iso 1600

This is quite haunting with the silhouettes against the brilliant oranges of the sunset reflecting off the water.   Posted: 01/09/2020 16:04:08

Haunting, that's something I hadn't considered.
Honestly, this image isn't even saturated in program, that's exactly what that sunset looked like. It was heavenly !

Beautiful sunset. I like the silhouettes of all the swans, geese and duck and their reflection on the rice field. Donna, I posted my comment to your image last week. I just returned to our group and it is not posted. I think what I am doing is hitting "return" instead of clicking on the "submit" icon.   Posted: 01/14/2020 07:29:45

Beautifully composed image with exquisite sunset lighting! Isolating 3 swans in different poses in the foreground is no mean task given the huge numbers in the flock. Use of silhouette works perfectly here.   Posted: 01/14/2020 18:08:50

You know, that was such a beautiful sunset that my friend and I just sat and watched it some of the time, not even taking pictures. It was magnificent. I didn't even have to saturate this image !
Thank you for your comments !
