Splish! Splash! Splosh! by John Clare

April 2021 - Splish! Splash! Splosh!

About the Image(s)

During lockdown I have been experimenting with unfamiliar types of photography. I’d never shot still life or a triptych so this represents two new paths. I shot it using a fast shutter speed (1/4000s) on my normal camera and tripod with a 50mm lens outside in the garden using natural daylight. No special kit, no infra-red triggers or anything fancy.

The first difficulty was timing the dropping of the fruit and pressing the cable release while ensuring the fruit landed in the rather small glass! Once I had mastered that I then had to deal with the sun moving which changed the lighting dramatically. I then realised the original background wasn’t right, so I ordered the one you see here, dried everything off and did it all again a couple of days later. By then I’d come up with the idea of a triptych so, armed with the right types of fruit, I shot the whole thing in 20 minutes, avoiding the problem of the light changing too much. I was keen to get different shaped splashes, so I used live view to check. I reversed the one on the right to make it fit the pattern.

Great idea, really well done!! Love the idea of using a triptych to display them!!   Posted: 04/09/2021 10:39:52

I love the images! It is so playful and well executed. The triptych is a great way of showing the photos but my only draw backs are your spacing and the stroke. Viewer's left appears wider than the right and the stroke seems to exacerbate the sides. I know the top is slightly narrower than the bottom but that doesn't bother me. The photos are fabulous and that's what really counts!!   Posted: 04/11/2021 13:42:52

HI John
I think lockdown has made us all review and find new things close to hand to photograph think I have photographed each and every texture inside and outside the house to add to portraits, you have absolutely nailed this fabulous movement in each image the only colour is that from fruits and concentrates the eye and superbly presented,it has it all for me.   Posted: 04/12/2021 16:34:55

Hi everyone

Thanks for the very kind comments...I'm delighted my image was regarded as fun and cheerful. Debbie...thanks for your comment about size but I think it's an optical illusion. I'm pretty sure I sized them all the same in PS but I will go back and check:-)
Have fun all!
