About the Image(s)

This is Gordon, a Great Horned Owl. He fell out of the nest when he was very small and suffered traumatic brain injury. He never really grew up and now must remain in captive because he can't hunt for himself. I was enamored by his eyes so I converted a photograph to B&W and masked his eyes to keep them yellow. Shot was hand held, 100 ISO, f/6.3 to keep the background soft. B&W conversion was in PSCC.

Gordon is very good looking. What a great idea to convert to b&w but leave his eyes yellow. Very attention getting! The background color is perfect. Focus is sharp. You've done a great job!   Posted: 01/13/2018 17:50:44

Very dramatic eyes and face-good job. Maybe the background is too soft as I would like the ears to be sharper. Did he ruffle his feathers as the feathers on the chest are blurred. If that bothers folks, one could crop to a head shot.   Posted: 01/20/2018 08:26:45

The background was a cloudless sky. He was ruffling his feathers and his "ear" feathers were blowing in the wind. I was shooting with some big glass so I was positioned lower than he was and only trying to get his face sharp. Crop out some sky but body wasn't touched.   Posted: 01/20/2018 10:03:33

Leave it to me to find a spec of dust. A white spec to the right of his left eye, Otherwise a like the look. Well done.

Debbie-You produced a beautiful image which is not that easy in this kind of windy situation.I agree with your comments you gave to David. It's sharp enough and you gave a very interesting touch of coloring Gordon's eyes. I spotted white spec to the right eye of his right side! Well done Debbie.

Very nice portrait of the owl. The eyes are tack sharp making the rest of the feather issue, whether blowing in the wind or he was ruffling his feather a none issue. I personally would not have left his eyes in color because in my mind I fill in the color.   Posted: 01/24/2018 20:51:21

Very nice portrait and the eyes draw the attention. I think I would like to see this with a muted green background.   Posted: 01/27/2018 10:38:34
