Mountain Aurora by David Garrison

July 2017 - Mountain Aurora

About the Image(s)

taken on winter norway trip from hurtigruden cruise. used tripod, manual focus, ISO2400, F4, 24-105 lens. The original pic had low clouds so I put in some mountains instead. Are mountain edges too sharp?

Nicely done, sharp edges of the mountains seem to go with the pic.   Posted: 07/17/2017 09:14:59

When I first saw this, I didn't even notice the mountains. I was fixated on the green and the little white dots! Once I read your description, I saw the mountains. For me, the left side and middle work but I think the area on the right might be "out of balance". Never having seen a sky or mountains like this; not for sure, but I might soften the edge of the mountain on the right so it blends with the sky a bit more. That top edge on the right just throws me. Hope this make sense. Really like the green light!!!   Posted: 07/17/2017 09:22:19

What a wonderful opportunity to photograph the Northern Lights. I think they formed a complementary pattern above the mountains. I do not think the mountain tops are too sharp. To my eye they are nicely lit by the Northern Lights.   Posted: 07/23/2017 20:40:45

David- I may not have a chance to go up there to take a picture of Northen Lights but I am curious to know what was your time exposure? I am sure your camera was on tripod and you took many shots with different exposure time. About the sharpness of mountains and blurriness of the lights I have no questions. I like your shot any way.

Very nice image of the northern lights. I like the placement of the mountains to the lights. I do feel that the mountain edges would be better if you soften them a few pixels.   Posted: 07/24/2017 16:23:37

Very nice capture of the Northern Lights. My only concern it the part that is cut off on the right hand side.   Posted: 07/28/2017 09:56:58
