But Mama by Debbie Perez

July 2017 - But Mama

About the Image(s)

I spent a lot of time photographing baby birds this past spring. Baby gallinules were perhaps my favorite chicks. You may notice the chick in the back has a red "wing". That is actually a spur to help the chicks to get out of the nest. What you can't see is the have long legs and HUGE feet. I have no explanation for the red scalp. The water was pretty intense as far as color so I used a texture to lighten it. Few basic tweaks in LR, texture was done in PS with a mask to keep it off the birds and last thing was the frame.

Yup, i have pics of their huge bright yellow feet, it enables them to walk on water lily leaves..
The white frame/border really helps the image.
I keep forgetting to do that to my own images.
I like the foreground and background image.
Thanks for the compliment. Jesse   Posted: 07/17/2017 09:39:42

I do like the texture and colors in the water. Some how the chick on the right looks out of focus and the chick in the back doesn't look well masked. (some what blurry around the edge)   Posted: 07/17/2017 20:16:19

I like the placement of the three birds. The chick in the front seems to be asking Mom a question. Good interaction between the two. The colors in the water are really nice particularly the reflection of the orange beaks. I do wish Mom were in sharper focus though.   Posted: 07/20/2017 21:59:30

Deddie-I agree your texture effect has worked very well on color and water but I do think that you lost a little bit sharpness on birds if you minutely look at them. AS they say you can't have every thing perfect always. Overall, you did very well and your white border adds up the beauty.

A nice image with the interaction of the mother duck and ducklings. I feel you did a nice job bringing the intensity of the water down. Agree with Dave about the masking.   Posted: 07/24/2017 16:11:29

You did a great job of capturing the story of the mother feeding her offspring. The mother is not real sharp. I also think a polarizer might have toned done some of the glare.   Posted: 07/28/2017 09:48:23

Oh, that's a great suggestion!! Wish I could afford one for that lens. Need to save some $$!
