Plastic Spoons by Marcus Miller

May 2020 - Plastic Spoons

About the Image(s)

Isolation means there's more time for photographic play. This image demonstrates Birefringence. The jar of plastic spoons were placed in front of my computer monitor, which backlit them with polarized light. On the camera I used a macro lens with a circular polarizer and turned the filter til it blacked out the background. I also under exposed 2 stops. The light is split and refracted as it passes through the spoons and shows an array of colours in the stress lines of the spoons. This technique works best on clear molded plastic and I had poor results with a plastic water bottle.

Very clever in seeing and creating this wonderful image. The colors are beautiful ! It appears that there are 2 glasses? when only one? is needed.   Posted: 05/10/2020 10:43:15

The jam jar has 2 rings which give the illusion that there are 2 jars.   Posted: 05/10/2020 12:37:57

A masterful piece. I'm thinking if suppressing a bit the middle piece, which seems a little pointy, would fit the overall feel better, but I'm not really sure about it : )   Posted: 05/11/2020 18:21:07

That's a good thought to improve the symmetry and all I have to do is turn the spoon a bit to make it round.   Posted: 05/11/2020 19:38:08

Quite an inspirational technical exercise that I, for one, wouldn't have thought about.   Posted: 05/25/2020 14:09:31
