Brother and sister by Alastair Cochrane

October 2019 - Brother and sister

About the Image(s)

Two of our Shetland Sheepdogs who are brother and sister. Very difficult to photograph as they rarely stay still in spite of efforts to get them to pose and it is so easy for the white of their coats to burn out and so I usually underexpose up to at least one stop and recover detail in editing. I cropped this to feature their faces having managed to get them to look at the camera and had to adjust the colour balance as it was taken late in a summer evening and the sun was quite strong and red.

This is a most adorable portrait and I think you have captured the whites very well. Could use a small border?   Posted: 10/21/2019 13:12:47

Well balanced composition with the triangular faces and snouts of the two dogs. The layering and contrast of black against white and vice versa is what makes this image especially appealing. Catch light in both dogs gives a sense of life. Well done, Alastair!   Posted: 10/23/2019 05:10:37

Very strong double portrait. Yes, a border would be nice, but against the black background of this page, it could be neither a black border nor a white border. But I think you make most of your images with a print in mind; so I'd expect you'd display it against a mat or frame.   Posted: 10/26/2019 13:05:06
