Swan lake by Snehendu Kar

October 2018 - Swan lake

About the Image(s)

Another resurrected image, originally taken 42 years ago in 1976 at the Lake Urquhart in Scotland (while in search of Loch Ness!!!)
It was a very bright day and the swans were too bright. I used a polarizing filter on my Nikkor 24-85mm @ 85mm, f=16, 1/250 sec.
The original was on Kodak high-definition 200 ASA color film. I have never seen such serene beauty; swans like Tchaikovsky's ballerinas peacefully in a circle sharing food thrown by visitors. There was no fighting for food like other flocks of birds have. I wanted to produce a painting-like image to conceal distorted colors and scratches on the old negative by scanning it and using Photoshop art filters to adjust color, saturation, contrast, and textures.

This is a very beautiful 'creation' with such a painterly look! The only thing I might consider changing is the overly strong red color of the beaks .....   Posted: 10/10/2018 11:57:13

Well done in hiding the defects on the negative. The red of the beaks is a little too strong and not quite in keeping with the rest of the image.   Posted: 10/12/2018 10:41:46

After all the manipulation, I find the outcome very pleasing. The combination of the brightly painted beaks, purple water and white swans in a large print would dominate a contemporary decor. Perhaps this image would appeal to an interior designer for their client's new contemporary castle.   Posted: 10/12/2018 18:44:45

Very painterly Snehendu! The classic reds/whites/blues combination work well in this case. The S-curves of the necks and the triangular tails and beaks make this composition pleasing. The two ducks fills the odd space in the background. Making the old new again- ain't technology grand!   Posted: 10/14/2018 11:08:37

I like the composition and the effect of the filter. The image is probable cropped a little too tight at the top; I'd have liked a little more room above the topmost swan.   Posted: 10/27/2018 13:29:41
