October 2018 - Signs of winter

About the Image(s)

Some hostas giving way for winter after a fine display over the summer.
I saw these in the evening in the garden last week as the sun was going down and managed to take two photographs before the light disappeared. I was attracted by the fading colours of the leaves and by the next morning the leaves had more or less gone.
Today we tidied them up and put the pots in a sheltered place until spring comes.

A very lovely capture ! Great colors .....Consider cropping about 30 % off the left side to concentrate more on the changing colors.

Yes Mark, it could do with a crop. I would really have liked to have had the opportunity to spend more time taking photographs of the leaves but their downfall happened virtually overnight.   Posted: 10/12/2018 10:48:26

Great capture. I like the timing of your image, just as the colours were changing. I'm always amazed at the pace that nature goes through its phases. We feel we can hang onto to a moment or period of time, but then it's gone.   Posted: 10/12/2018 18:33:08

Alastair… I like how the colors stand out against a black (or almost black) background. I have often used the "Levels" slider to pull the blacks further and this technique would easily remove the pot rims from view. I am drawn to the large puddle of water in the lower third of your image and the surrounding leaves "point" to this as a natural focus point; for this reason I would crop from the right (a/b 10-15%). Lovely image and the water drops are a bonus!   Posted: 10/14/2018 10:52:19
