March 2023 - Dunbar Bridge Side View

About the Image(s)

This is a covered bridge in Putnam County, Indiana built in 1880. I liked the road curve and the long side view of this bridge that is 174 feet long. I think that the window shades add to the interest of the bridge. It was taken with my Olympus OM-1 digital camera, Olympus 12-45mm lens at 18mm (36mm for 35mm equivalent), 1/800th second, f4.0, ISO 200.

The colour of the building is a sharp contrast to that of the sky and nearby trees. The road acts as a leading line, guiding the eyes 'into' the building. The same shot taken when the sun is low in the sky (blue hour) would have given a more powerful composition, but unfortunately, that is not always possible.   Posted: 03/13/2023 10:30:50

I like how you were able to bring out the history of this subject. The curve leading into the bridge is guarded by guard rails that have come into play with rust, bends and shaded bruises. As you come into the bridge you see aged and deteriorating wooden beams and planks. The aging color and lack of color of the bridge adds to the history. In contrast ,the nice bright morning light on the trees, bright green grass and blue skies added the hope of a new day. I like this photo.   Posted: 03/15/2023 10:36:41

Thank you, it was a pretty day. I am glad that some of these old bridges are being preserved. This one was built in 1880.   Posted: 03/15/2023 13:58:29

Both railings and roadway lead the eyes initially to the deteriorating interior of the bridge. Then my eyes were drawn secondarily to the bright red bridge siding. That says a lot Tom for your guiding composition, stronger than bright red. I always enjoy tracking down covered bridges, as they seem to beckon you to bygone days. Excellent composition, color contrast, brightness and color saturation. I like your image as is Tom.   Posted: 03/16/2023 18:49:26

Thanks Rich. This bridge with the curving road was a great find. Looking at it again, I agree that the guardrails are also important to lead the eye to the bridge opening.   Posted: 03/16/2023 19:26:18

Tom, You created a Very colorful image with big area red covered bridge, blue sky and green trees. The curved shape of roadway and the guardrails guide me get into inside of the covered bridge. You stand at a right shooting point, can showing a part of inside structures, all that create your Expellant composition!   Posted: 03/21/2023 20:09:03

Fantastic composition. Colors really attract attention. I would like it better if the photo were made to look less noonish. The comments on my photo maybe would help this one. Maybe something coming out of the bridge: a horse and carriage would be ideal; but even a dog or a bicycle and rider.   Posted: 03/23/2023 17:54:15
