Annas Hummingbird Female Feeding on Chuparosa by Barbara Mallon

January 2021 - Annas Hummingbird Female Feeding on Chuparosa

About the Image(s)

I was walking in the Botanic Garden in Santa Barbara yesterday and this hummingbird performed for me. I took about 12 shots and liked this one the best. first is exposure correction. There were a lot of twigs in wrong places, so I eliminated them with rubber stamp and even had to do a content aware fill to get the wing intact. Luckily I had been taking hummingbird photos on my back porch so all I had to do was take off the lens cap and zoom the lens out to 400mm. The version I am entering in nature would not allow all the rubber stamp and fill. It was much more tricky to dodge and burn. I also had to do a tighter crop.

The hummingbird body and head (including the eye) all look very sharp. The lighting and the red flower make this a powerful image. Too bad that the flower stem is out of focus, but that is what you get with a 400mm lens. Overall, I really like the image and would not change anything.   Posted: 01/10/2021 15:19:27

I find your image Barbara provides a WOW factor, is extra sharp where it needs to be and technically is suburb. I cannot find anything that could be changed. Excellent.   Posted: 01/12/2021 19:02:50

I think photographing humming birds is a hard task. You did a great job capturing this one. As Tom pointed out that the stem was out of focus. I think it works better this way, if it were in focus I think it might be distracting.   Posted: 01/13/2021 11:31:10
