Hummingbird in Hong Kong Orchid Tree by Barbara Mallon

September 2020 - Hummingbird in Hong Kong Orchid Tree

About the Image(s)

We have this lovely tree in the backyard of my daughter’s house in Santa Barbara. It is a Kong Kong Orchid Tree and has huge blooms all over. (Solidarity with Hong Kong!) The hummingbirds generally ignore it and prefer my feeder. This one was flying it and drinking water drops off petals. I brightened and sharpened the bird; and slightly blurred the background to lessen the noise. It has been cropped a lot.

Nice stop action and focus, this is not easy to do. The only thing I find distracting is the stem on the left side. You might be able to crop some from the bottom then a little of the top to balance it out.   Posted: 09/11/2020 14:53:31

Very good shot!
The hummingbird is sharp, I like the diagonal composition, I would not to crop any thing. I have little nitpick, the whole picture tone is too warm-yellow, I would change it little cooler. The white spot of the petals is attracted my eyes, I would burn it down a little bit.   Posted: 09/13/2020 11:42:58

Nicely composed Barbara and compliments to the lighting and timing. I noticed the complimentary color blue behing the humingbird and brought it out a bit more. As Tony, I felt changing the hue toward the blue side a tad would help. Also I added a bit more sharpening with Topaz Lab's Sharpen Ai   Posted: 09/15/2020 15:54:22

That's how I did per my comments. It's similar as Rich's.   Posted: 09/16/2020 01:07:13

Really like the stop action of this very small bird in flight. I think that your crop is perfect and would not change a thing. The blurred background is very good. Great shot.   Posted: 09/21/2020 12:24:48

Wow. Great stop action. The level of blurriness is just perfect. I for one find the level of warmth perfect.   Posted: 09/27/2020 08:39:16
