Gazebo by Rich Sears

June 2020 - Gazebo

About the Image(s)

At the end of May I led two groups from our club to Spring Grove Cemetery and Arboretum. Hidden from public view I discovered this Gazebo in great shape, but in less than ideal lighting. In processing I principally focused on opening the deep shadows, closing down the highlights and dodging, and some cropping. Sony A6300 APS-C, 16-55mm, at 16mm, 1/30sec. f6.3, ISO 100. Would you go back under diffused lighting or don’t bother?

Woo! Such a pretty Gazebo. Do you mind to put on the original one? so we can compare two? I will also highlight on left bottom side of Gazebo a bit, a bit over explore part.   Posted: 06/08/2020 02:36:11

Thank you Grace. Regarding adjusting the lower left side of the Gazebo I did decrease the exposure upto the grey color looked unatural. A copy of the original is attached.   Posted: 06/09/2020 09:35:44

Your gazebo is very inviting. It needs to be straightened just a bit. Also it looks HDR to me. It is so easy to brighten a dark area and have it look unnatural. I would try early or late exposures with a low sun. I like long, light shadows.   Posted: 06/09/2020 13:07:41

Thanks for your comments Barbara. In PS I applied crop straightner to the center railing, knowing the ground was not level. The foreground shadows were opened, are you saying they look unnatural Barbara?   Posted: 06/13/2020 12:53:19

Interesting old gazebo. I like the crop. It looks like the gazebo is all in the sunlight, is much better than partial shade on the building. Looking at the edited image and the original, it looks like you lost some of the whites on the gazebo. The flowers around it add to the image.   Posted: 06/13/2020 12:45:47

Very nicely done. I enjoy everything about it from the selection of your subject o the final product. If I had to pick a weakness...and I really had to look... I would try and get a bet more definition between the very top of the gazebo and the tree behind it.   Posted: 06/17/2020 10:42:24

Very beautiful Gazebo in around green environment. It's helpful you brighten the dark trees on left side. Looking at the original, it was over exposed on left side of gazebo, the edited version you already decreased the exposure and get more details of bright area, but I would try to do more, increase the Clarity and/or contrast a little bit to see whether better.   Posted: 06/18/2020 19:24:50
