Bull Dogging by Tom McCreary, APSA, MPSA

January 2018 - Bull Dogging

About the Image(s)

Since my wife Carol is into PJ photography, we went to this small rodeo event at Kingfisher, Oklahoma last spring. In bull dogging (also called steer wrestling) the cowboy jumps off his horse and catches the steer and puts it on the ground, feet up. Most rodeo events are held at night, and the lighting is terrible! This small local event was held in the afternoon and we were able to get a spot where the cowboys were coming straight toward us (of course we were behind the fence). I liked the dust in the image and the fact that the cowboy was losing his hat. It was taken with my Nikon D7200 with Nikon 18-300mm lens at 210mm, 1/1250 second, f10, ISO 640. I cropped in some, but other wise it is as taken.

Nicely done Tom. I like that the dust being generated serves to separate both the rider and the horse from the background. The eye immediately is attracted to the steer wrestler and his self-assurance Good composition. As an alternative one could crop solely in on the steer wrestler and the steer.   Posted: 01/14/2018 14:37:23

Very nice action photo. The background is very interesting and I am generally against cropping but I think that you could focus to your subject which is the cowboy in action. Very captivating shot anyway.   Posted: 01/16/2018 09:00:24

Maybe the horse is a bit too far away from the cowboy, but I like the horse, running straight toward me. I will show another image next month.   Posted: 01/16/2018 14:26:32

Very nice action image! With out your explanation, I am not quite understand the story. I like the horse. It's front legs jumping up off the ground in action. Photo with horse is keeping your complete story.   Posted: 01/24/2018 00:35:17

Lovely capture! The action is dynamic, the motion caught at just the right time. My only quibble is the blue of the trailer that catches the eye. if you can crop that out the rest is perfect as it is. By cropping a bit off the top, the canvas also becomes a bit wider, giving it a panoramic scope.   Posted: 01/30/2018 05:32:00
