Young Jay Rests on Red Maple by Janet DiMattia

January 2021 - Young Jay Rests on Red Maple

About the Image(s)

Noticed this Blue Jay on the Red Maple just outside the house. The contrast between the bird and the leaves caught my attention. My D300 was handy so I took a grab shot hand-held. Was taken through a double glass window. Ambient light, ISO 800,SS 1/125, F 5.6. Used a slight vignette filter from Nik software to draw the focus onto the Jay.

Hi Janet,
WOW ! love this image. to capture him through a window, double WOW. Good contrast of the leaves and the blue bird. I can not say any corrective or changes, because I love your capture.

Wow, the contrast between the bird and leaf colors is exactly what attracted me to this image. You handled the color nicely in post-processing. So many images I see online are oversaturated and unnatural, but you've managed to show the vibrancy without overdoing it. Nicely done getting the catch light in the eye too. Your windows are much cleaner than mine :)   Posted: 01/16/2021 17:12:15

Hi Janet,
This is beautiful to me. I agree, the color values and contrasts are captivating and your use of slight vignetting draws me into the image.
The feather details add interest for me and, as Tracy mentions, the catch light in the young jay's eye is great! Thanks for sharing this one.

Great! Great! image. This is so nice with perfect composition and lighting. Great catch light in the eye. This is amazing to think you took this through the glass. The image has a nice painterly look with great color. The only thing I might do, being very picky, is the removal of several twigs. The main one being in the vertical one in front of the bird and one behind the tail. I also darkened the bright area in front of the birds chest. This is a beautiful image.   Posted: 01/17/2021 15:12:56
