Elf's Holiday Costume by Janet DiMattia

December 2020 - Elf's Holiday Costume

About the Image(s)

To get into the spirit with the approaching Christmas Season, this image was taken in a past year on a visit to my grandson's Holiday Performance in NJ. After the show was over the children were wandering around having fun. Was attracted to an oversized costume a child was wearing as he kept tugging at it to kept from stepping on the pant legs.
Taken with Nikon D500 - no flash so ISO was raised to 6400, F9, S1/30.

I feel the composition, colors, and the sharp focus in this image are great. I don't feel the image can stand on its own without the explication of what I'm looking at. My first impression was what and why? Great colors.   Posted: 12/04/2020 20:28:16

Hi, Dick.
Thanks for your critique.
Looking back to when I was preparing the image, I was really reflecting back on what I experienced at the time and not giving thought that others would not have the same personal connection to the image as I had. You brought up a valid observation and I appreciate it. Lesson learned!

Sorry to disagree with Dick, but I didn't really need an explanation. I could see it was some kind of costume, and was oversized, or otherwise falling off. I liked the texture of the pant a whole lot, and especially the crown feature of the Christmas-y red. I found it engaging without explanation.   Posted: 12/08/2020 22:12:59

I admit that I read your description before even looking at the image so I already was aware the context, but understand Dick's helpful suggestion.

As, Sandra, I found your image engaging and it made me think of my grandson's participation in a past holiday event at his school. I could imagine him in this oversized costume and tapping his foot to the music!

Dick also points out so many strong points of your image and I love the lighting which reveals the interesting textures and details of the costume fabric.

The tight crop emphasized the close-up for me, but I wonder if a bit more space ahead of the toe would work to suggest room to move? I don't think the image is over-sharpened but wonder if the visible contrast between the red material and background in the lower right is simply some rim light effect?
