Peek A Boo by Tracy Szela

October 2020 - Peek A Boo

About the Image(s)

Details are: Sigma 105 macro lens, f13, 1/200s. I used an aperture that would give me a little more depth of field for the spider and petals, while still blurring the background. The light is natural sunlight. I wanted the spider to be a little surprise in the photo, but still obvious.

Hi, Tracy. Nice subject you found to photograph. Good catch. I tried a crop so that the insect is a little more prominent as I felt the blossom overwhelmed it. Not sure I like the crop I made. Another thought I had was to sharpen the blossom as it seems to be on the same plane as the spider. Colors and composition good.   Posted: 10/17/2020 09:15:04

I agree with pretty much with Janet on this image. I like the background. Overall I feel the image works well for what you had in mind. I did make a crop and applied some structure which brought out more texture to the petals. I did darken the light pink a little.   Posted: 10/18/2020 14:31:00

Hi Tracy,
Wow, I think you have a great eye spotting this tiny spider amid the petals! The contrasting lines of the petals are interesting to me and the bit of back lighting of the petal behind and beneath the spider is lovely in the image composition.

Because the insect is so small I agree with Janet and Dick that making it more prominent is something to explore. I do like the image modifications that Dick included in his example.   Posted: 10/18/2020 16:11:49

Very pretty! I love the discovery of the spider. However, I would have liked the pink flowers to be a bit sharper. I very much like Dick's crop and adjustments, which somehow seem to make the petals sharper, tho he didn't say he did that.   Posted: 10/18/2020 17:47:38

I used NIK software, and used the structure slider at about 42% to give the detail in the petals. I try to have my images tack sharp out of the camera but I will then use the structure slider in NIK to give the image great detail and depth. I feel the key to a sharp image is the use of a tripod.   Posted: 10/18/2020 20:10:48

The lighting in this image is beautiful, and the flower is wonderfully captured. I would like to see more of the spider. It might be interesting to tamper slightly with the yellow on the stem of the flower (just below the petals) so that it is more similar to the yellow of the spider.   Posted: 10/20/2020 14:05:22
