Dewy Leaf by Zolt Levay

June 2020 - Dewy Leaf

About the Image(s)

Here’s my Group 6 entry for June. It’s a small leaf taken last spring on a very dewy morning. It was made with a Nikon D850 and Nikkor 200-500mm f/5.6 at 500mm (not a macro lens of course, but pretty close detail with very soft background). Exposure was 320 sec., f/8 ISO 200. I thought the simple shape of the leaf with jewel-like dewdrops made strong graphic elements with the very out of focus highlights (bokeh) providing a pleasant, contrasting background.

This is a nice image. I like the water drops, would have liked them to be a little more focused. For me it is a little distracting having the circles in the image. I may have tried a different background so the "dewy leaf" was more prominent. There seems to be a competition between the circles and the main subject.   Posted: 06/04/2020 18:10:26

For me I love the bokeh in this image. I feel the top could be cropped some. I darkened the background a little. I also applied some vignette. Like Bill, I wish the dewy leaf had a little more DOF so more of the dew drops would be more focused.   Posted: 06/04/2020 18:51:08

A very pretty and interesting subject - creative! I agree, however, that the background is distracting and competes with the main subject. I think I like Dick's crop and adjustments, too.   Posted: 06/12/2020 15:36:32

I do agree with the suggestions that the others made. The leaf being so small does stand out more with the darkening around the edges. The green tone of the background, if darkened, works for me as it then does not compete with the the leaf. Good detail in the droplets and good sharpness of those at the tip.   Posted: 06/13/2020 19:30:06

Thanks for the comments, all helpful. This was actually a bit of a grab, I'd like to have been able to spend more time to work with the depth of focus, would have preferred the whole leaf in focus and the background highlights smaller and less prominent. I like their graphic nature but they do compete with the leaf for attention.   Posted: 06/14/2020 10:57:04

Good idea, Zolt. You have practiced minimalism here.
The improvement suggested by Dick, cropping at the top and vigneting, I think really works with your image.   Posted: 06/24/2020 14:53:18
