Swan with young by Janet DiMattia

June 2020 - Swan with young

About the Image(s)

While going through old files found this photo taken several years ago. Upon looking at it - wished I had left a little more of the adult's body to balance the cygnets. Evidently the young only stay a day or so in the nest and adjust to swimming immediately. Taken from my kayak as they nested across the river from my house. S 1/4000, A 7.1,ISO 640, ambient light, with D300.

I love that trio of young ones and watchful parent; all the heads are aligned! I agree that it might be better to see more of the adult, but otherwise the subject is nicely set off against the uncomplicated background and I like the overall composition.   Posted: 06/03/2020 11:43:21

This is a great image. If this were my image I wouldn't change anything. The image of the mother for me is great. I really like the atmosphere with the mom looking after the "kids" as they move along. Having the young ones leading the "pack" under the watchful eye of the mother is very powerful. To my eye I am amazed the resemblance between the mom and the youngsters. Thanks for this enjoyable photo.   Posted: 06/04/2020 18:03:44

Just a wonderful image. You couldn't arrange the little ones any better the way they are lined up, from far to near, with each one being closer to the viewer. To my eye you have just the right amount of the mother showing to tell the story. The little ones are the main players in this image with the mother secondary. Great shot.   Posted: 06/04/2020 18:29:35

Adorable! Love how the babies are spaced so nicely and regularly apart. Love the mom's straight neck. I, too, might like to see more of the mom's body -- maybe even 3/4 of it to tie up with the 2 babies we see 3/4 of. However, who knows what's in the background, and in any event, this is a great shot and uplifting in a time when we need it!   Posted: 06/11/2020 14:03:48

Lovely vision of a family. Congratulations.
Also have a kind of "L" composition form I especially like.
Focus seem to be on the subjects, reflecting the true interest of every one of the brothers (sisters) in doing the lake crossing in perfect alinement with their mother (father).
I can't suggest any improvement.   Posted: 06/23/2020 14:28:43
