Money Plant by Dick States

May 2020 - Money Plant

About the Image(s)

I have money plants growing in my landscape and they are in full bloom. I took this shot when only the first flower appeared. They are biennials so the grow the first year and flower and set seed in discs that are about the size of a half dollar and die. Beautiful flowers.
This is a 29 shot stack shot at f-8. I always use a tripod and cable release. Polarizer on the 200 mm macro lens. I also shoot with mirror up.

Is this what I used to grow that we called the dollar plants that wound up with white circular discs after flowering? This image is a winner and if I didn't have a black thumb I'd consider trying it again.
Very well done.   Posted: 05/02/2020 21:10:24

This is that plant. They are beautiful right now, just covered with flowers. The are very easy to grow. When the seeds are ripe I pull the plant out of the ground, go around and shake the seeds out in the landscape beds. The next spring, now, you will have new plants coming up. They flower the second year. I would be glad to send you seeds if you want them.   Posted: 05/03/2020 06:43:14

Thanks so much. I'd love to give it a try but I'm not optimistic. The older I get the more I think of an old story I often tell. My mother in law had a very green thumb and I often say that she could grow a tree from a toothpick and I could make a toothpick from a tree in 2 days. However if you still have faith, I'm at 9869 C Summerbrook Terrace, Boynon Beach FL 33437.. and once again Thanks.   Posted: 05/03/2020 08:07:25

So when the seeds get ripe, probably August, I will send you some to plant. Just remember they flower their second year. Some people use the discs in flower arrangements.   Posted: 05/03/2020 08:47:35

If I get them to stay alive for the second year, I will send you pictures. Thanks.   Posted: 05/03/2020 09:03:50

Beautifully done!
Love the colors, slight angle to the right top, and the sharp details throughout!
The angle of the blossom showing the illusion of three of petals was a nice touch.
Very nice.

This is lovely, the black background makes the forms and color really pop.   Posted: 05/10/2020 08:53:42

I love that I feel I could reach out and touch the flower. It is so sharp and shows great care in handling the camera. you are a true artist. I have no idea of anyway you could improve this image.   Posted: 05/11/2020 16:29:41

Beautiful work! You manage very well the Helycon Focus tool. The subject resulted brilliant. Colors, detail, DoF, light, also very well measured. And the explanations guiding to learn how to repeat this kind of pictures. Many thanks Dick.   Posted: 05/18/2020 05:46:08

Gorgeous! It's all perfect, as usual, except I wish the flower's right upper side had been more perky-- or was it that it hadn't arisen yet! However, that's about the subject, not the photo. Love the clear and crisp view of all the little hairs. This is a great picture! Good for you! Do those flowers grow in a climate like L.A.? I'ld love some seeds, too, if they do!
