Blanket Flower by Tom Pickering

November 2019 - Blanket Flower

About the Image(s)

Specs: Nikon D5000, Tamron 60mm Macro, F11, 1s, ISO 200, Tripod, Room Light

44-image focus stack of a blanket flower in a cheap supermarket bouquet, merged in Helicon Focus 7. In PS, I cleaned up any debris and did some targeted dodging and burning. Seems like something is missing here, though. Suggestions?

Yes, whilst good in all the usual respects, it seem to lack punch and seems unsettled.
The subject in this crop seems to me to be the centre of the flower, yet there's much to distract from it. So, some thoughts...
- is the centre too close to the top and left? It's "looking out" of the picture to me.
- should the petals be darkened to make more emphasis on the cente, and the centre brightened a little?

Hmmm . . . Definitely food for thought, Stuart!   Posted: 11/08/2019 07:49:20

Hi, Tom.
After studying your image I feel that I am drawn into the large center of the blossom so I cropped it slightly and reversed it so the petals lead the eye to it. What do you think? Color tones are good. Feel there are possibilities and the others may come up with other ideas as well.   Posted: 11/09/2019 17:52:34

I agree with your composition change, Janet! This really leads the eye into the image. Thank you!   Posted: 11/21/2019 12:13:48

A beautiful and unusual color contrast of the flower Tom. I like the orientation that Janet has made to show proper leading lines as we tend to read left to right by default. I agree with Stuart on cropping / positioning of the center. To me, it looks the image is incomplete with the current crop. I am thinking if you show a little wider shot to include center of the flower might help.   Posted: 11/09/2019 21:00:10

I like the colors in this image. Lots of images here in this stack its tack sharp all but the area along the front edge on the middle petal that's not sharp. I like the flip that Janet made but I don't like the close crop see made on the center. I feel the image needs more petals showing not less. I agree with Stuart, It would have much more impact if it wasn't cropped so close the top and left. This would give it more punch.   Posted: 11/10/2019 19:29:29

I agree with Dick here. I like the flip, and all the colors, but I feel I want to see more of the entire flower. As cropped or shot here, the center of the flower seems to be what the eye goes to, but the petals are actually more beautiful in my opinion and I would have liked to see more of them.   Posted: 11/16/2019 10:11:02

Alas, this is the way it was shot - I have not cropped this capture. I have other versions that give more petals and focus less on the center of the flower. I knew there was something not right, but I couldn't see it myself. d:¬{(   Posted: 11/21/2019 12:16:26
