After the rain by Janet DiMattia

August 2019 - After the rain

About the Image(s)

Attempted to capture the rain drops on a day lily in my yard. (1/640 sec, f/18, ISO 1600, natural lighting bright overcast, hand held. In post processing I purposely darken the image mainly to compensate for the imperfection on the lower part of the flower and liked the result! I did try to patch that spot up but was unsuccessful in doing so. Wanted the rain drops and red part to stand out so I did not lighten the whole area. Opinions welcome.

The lighting and color are both gorgeous and the water drops make this an outstanding image. Just beautiful!   Posted: 08/08/2019 06:42:33

The most striking thing to me is the composition, with the triangular lily filling one corner and erupting into the picture. I really like that.
The water drops are very pleasant as well I think. Charles Needle said that he always take a couple of pictures without water drops, then sprays the bloom and so can choose either, although it sounds like they were natural drops here.
The texture and colour are lovely I think.
Less attractive to my eye is the tip of the petal on the right which is touching the frame. I don't mind the significant amount left out of the top petal, but the one on the right looks accidental.
Personally I would still have lightened the bloom a little.   Posted: 08/09/2019 14:20:26

WOW! This is an awesome photo, definitely a wall hanger. Stuart did a great job of reviewing the photo.

Close-up photography is something I just don't seem to have patience for. I am impressed by all the images posted here this month.   Posted: 08/11/2019 10:56:26

Nice soft light on this. A bright overcast day is perfect for taking flower pictures. Love the composition. Nice background and I like the frame. A great shot.   Posted: 08/11/2019 20:29:27

I love the blur in the background, and the darkening. I adore the clear drops of rain and the one on the bottom just about to fall off! Nice composition - tho I do agree with Stuart that it would be better to see just a bit more of the tip of the petal on the right. Could you recrop?   Posted: 08/17/2019 17:31:15

My opinion: Good shot. DoF enough. Correct composition. Splendid colors. Nice frame.
To improve only to blur the green leave behind the lily.
Congratulations!   Posted: 08/20/2019 12:29:18

Sometimes is better to have more of something out of frame than that same thing touching the edge, which caused a mild discomfort in the viewer who feels crowded. For me, in the case of your image, that discomfort only comes with long study, while the first viewing is quite pleasing to the eye. The fact is, the eye is drawn to the central red and yellow which is quite lovely. The border frames things nicely as well.   Posted: 08/20/2019 17:51:26

I agree with Tom. I like it a lot.   Posted: 08/21/2019 09:10:12
