About the Image(s)

I took this a week ago at a B&B in Canada. I loved the lines and the evening light on the plants. I used the small flash attached to the camera to increase the light on the closer plant. Taken with the Olympus OMD-EM1 with a 60mm (120mm full frame) macro lens at 1/60, f4.0. Post processed in NIK color EFX Pro and fine tuned in Lightroom.

My first impression here was WOW.

The lighting is very effective (the flash is moderate), the color is great and the composition very elegant. At the beginning I thought there were segments in the leaf, an optical illusion, a kind of 3D effect.

I could imagine this pic as a poster, it has a strong impact.

When I look at it for some time I wonder if the darker part of the pic on the right side should be smaller so that the lit leaf on the left side could get more presence.

Peter,
This is my first week as well. Thanks for the positive comments. I agree with your suggestion on the crop.
Cheers,

Hey Tom - I like this image quite a bit. The monochrome nature to my eye is very pleasing and calming. Could be the green, which is well saturated and sharp where it needs to be. The use of the flash is well done and lends it self - to my eye - a dramatic composition. Nicely done.   Posted: 07/08/2017 10:03:38

Hi Tom, I love the composition and the lines in this image. I love how the foreground leaf is sharp and the background leaf is not sharp. I feel the foreground leaf which is sharp and the major player in the image should be the larger of the two. Because of this, to my eye, I would crop the image making the background leaf smaller. You have a good eye to see this shot. Nice work. It good to have you in our group. I have included my idea of a possible crop.   Posted: 07/09/2017 20:26:25

That is a good point and in my opinion it does work well.

Hi, Tom. Welcome!
Your image just makes me want to reach out and touch it. Very effective use of lighting and shadows. Dick's suggested crop works well as it eliminates a bit of the dark areas in the corners. Just the green tones with a suggestion of yellow on the edges adds so much to the presentation.
