About the Image(s)

This young lady and her two friends happened to be at Graffiti Alley when I went to see what was going on. While maintaining an appropriate distance, I asked if I could take their pictures. I was especially interested in getting a photograph of this lady since she had clearly "dressed to the nines" (an ancient phrase). The three agreed and I took their pictures as a group and individually. As requested, I sent them copies after returning home and doing a bit of post-processing.

My processing was fairly basic. I cropped a bit and adjusted the lighting somewhat using Photoshop and Camera Raw.

What a great subject! She has beautiful eyes & hair. The bright red color in her pandemic fashion top and the supporting multicolored background makes this portrait one of the best I've seen since people started wearing masks in public.   Posted: 09/01/2020 09:22:16

Thank you, Stephen. I thought the matching eye-shadow was spectacular. Naturally, she also had matching fingernail polish but my photographs showing her hands looked too contrived.

Oliver,

Kudos on having the courage to ask. It really paid off. Exposure is excellent. The DOF is very good. Choice of color over black and white works to your advantage as well. My only suggestion would be to include all of her hair with slightly different centering or stepping back a little. Great portrait!   Posted: 09/10/2020 14:49:34

Oliver, She is an outstanding subject with the beautiful eyes and outfit. I know it would be a lot of work, but, I would have taken the original background out, and placed her onto a complete black background.   Posted: 09/12/2020 12:08:02

Interesting idea, Nick. I removed the BG but to me it made the image seem too artificial. So, I then darkened the BG which I find more appealing. I'll attach both. Your thoughts?

BTW, Photoshop's Select Subject command works wonders for selecting the young woman.

Oliver, Yes, the darkened background looks much better.   Posted: 09/12/2020 14:23:03

This is a wonderful portrait. I agree that darkening the background, as Nick has done, works better. The original background was too distracting. Her pandemic fashion top makes a strong statement.   Posted: 09/13/2020 22:09:18

A great image and quite a fashion statement. I didn't mind the coloured BG but I do agree the darkened one, not the black one, does put more emphasis on the subject. Good work Pete.   Posted: 09/14/2020 04:51:56

A portrait of the times. A beautiful subject dressed to the "T's" with a background that identifies where she was when the image was taken, well at least gives a clue to think about. It might do better in an exhibition with the background toned down in some way, but I have a feeling that Oliver will want to keep it the way it was taken. Well done.   Posted: 09/19/2020 21:24:36
