Anemone by Bob Laster

August 2020 - Anemone

About the Image(s)

The anemone caught my eye because of the bright complementary colors as well as the leading line of the stem extending to the blossom. The beauty of one of nature's stars, the flower, is something for everyone to enjoy.

It was made indoors with natural light with a Nikon D800 using a tripod and 105mm lens set at f 25 and an exposure of one second.

Great details and colors in the flower. I like the S curve of the stem. My only minor suggestion would be to darken the stem at the bottom where it is brighter than the upper part of the stem. It tends to draw my eye away from the beauty of the flower. Well done.   Posted: 08/01/2020 13:10:08

Superb shot!! Love colours and way the stem curves. Agree with Stephen about darkening down lower part of stem or even using a graduated blur?   Posted: 08/04/2020 10:36:31

The curve curve in the stem certainly adds to the image and the sharpness is spot on Only thing I would have added is very small frame to set it off. Not too important but I would have painted over the very small protuberance between the two lower LH petals. Well done!   Posted: 08/05/2020 07:04:21

I completely agree with Stephen's comments. Its well exposed and there is detail in both shadow and highlight areas. Good job.   Posted: 08/06/2020 19:58:11

Note from Shirley's mushrooms in group 23...I cropped off the borders, and extended the top. Then I cloned some background color across the top and redid the borders....This gave some more space at the top, which I should have done before submitting the image...Check it out now.....much better, huh!!

BTW. I love your anemones...great color and the background is perfect....good job....flowers being my favorite subjects...   Posted: 08/07/2020 15:28:58

Simple, but beautiful. I love the DOF. Flower is all sharp with blurred background. Great exposure and composition. I wouldn't change anything.   Posted: 08/10/2020 10:38:31

Bob, this is a very nice flower photo. great color and very sharp. I would like to see a border to complete the picture.   Posted: 08/10/2020 11:42:28

Nick, Thank you. I have never used borders and will have to learn more about how to use them.   Posted: 08/10/2020 11:58:01

Bob, I have taken hundreds (or thousands) of flower photographs. But, yours is really special. The curve of the stem and the sharpness of the entire flower are outstanding. And, I love the background -- enough detail to provide interest without detracting from the main subject, and slight green to give contest to the image.

Initially I thought you had used focus stacking to achieve the sharpness throughout the flower's depth-of-field. I was surprised to find that it was a single shot at f/25. It is rare that I go beyond f/16, but I think I'll be a bit more "liberal" in the future.

Very well done!

Hi Bob: A visitor from Group 31.... I love your image...at first glance I thought it was stacked until I read your description. Tack sharp, beautifully composed and processed. I'm thinking out loud now... do you think a 2-3 pix inside stroke might help? Nice Job!   Posted: 08/17/2020 11:11:59

Ella Thank you!! Good idea, I need to try that. Thanks for the advice.   Posted: 08/17/2020 12:08:51

Hi Bob, another visitor hear but from group 60. What a beautiful subject. The stem and the colors of the flower are just wonderful. I like the bottom part of the stem being slightly lighter than the rest because I think there should be shadow under the flower on the stem. I would darken it but not all the way. Just a nit picking but there is a small highlight that should be darken on the upper right leaf. I don't know why but it draws my eye. Wonderful photo!   Posted: 08/27/2020 03:57:39
