What Can You See? by Ian Chantler

March 2023 - What Can You See?

About the Image(s)

am glad to report I am feeling so much better but I have not had the camera out since early December and a bit lost what to post then remembered a visitor we had to the photo club in October who set up several table top scenarios top photograph using off camera flash I am always fascinated to watch and photograph smoke rising in a slight draught and seeing what results you get,now I van see a lady scuba diving with a fish swimming past, before you ask I am off all medication.
What can you see a bit of fun this month.

How I did it

Canon 5D Mk iii lens Canon 24-105mm EF24-105mm f/4L IS USM 1/200s,f8 ISO 100 focal length 65mm RAW file adjusted in Photoshop CS6 temperature cooled highlights darkened contrast adjusted sharpened using a high pass filter and cropped all round, converted to mono using a gradient map on an adjustment layer

Are you sure about the medication Ian? I too love watching smoke patterns like this, but having spent most of my working life in aerodynamics I enjoy seeing the technical aspects before I see the aesthetic. Actually, I do see the lower half of the lady scuba diver, and then do I see the head of a fish at the top. With this type of image it can be fun to copy on to a new layer and flip, then play with blend modes. Here is my suggestion using Lighten blend mode on the flipped layer. I see a lady dancer with her hair flying all over her head!   Posted: 03/08/2023 08:55:43

Guy, now we have a strong legged woman with a round mask covering the face, and a butterfly aura...   Posted: 03/08/2023 10:06:03

I didn't spot the butterfly. Nice interpretation.   Posted: 03/08/2023 10:54:30

I see a ballerina up on her toe and spinning as she dances. Her right arm is in front of her body and the left behind as she sling counter clockwise. The light is catching her left eye as she looks for her exit spot for the spin. Her long hair has been blown up by an offstage fan and is lifting and floating as she turns.

Obviously a good and provocative shot that draws the viewers' eyes in and stimulates the imagination.   Posted: 03/08/2023 11:15:59

Here is another variation on the copy and flip trick. If the image is a Background layer, make two copy layers. If it is already an image above a Background then just make another copy layer. Then in PS on the first image layer go to Filter>Distort>Twirl and set the angle to 120 deg. On the second image layer do the same but set the rotation to -120 deg. Then set the upper layer to Lighten blend mode and flip horizontal. It doesn't have to 120 deg. You can play with other angles. WARNING - this technique is seriously addictive and I take no responsibility for any addiction you may develop!!!   Posted: 03/09/2023 07:14:51

Guy, here now we enter the twilight zone of abstract creations. As you say, it may be addictive, and the interations are endless. Well done Ian.   Posted: 03/09/2023 13:10:48

I see two images, the first is a womans long legs wearing a short dress and high heels who boasts a beautifully shaped rear end and the top of her body shielded by the smoke. The second, an index finger, perhaps holding a cigarette that is exuding a smoke trail. Thanks for your entry Ian, imagination can be good for the sole. I'm pleased that you are feeling better as well, there are to many images to be made yet and we must all stay in good form.   Posted: 03/19/2023 09:28:48

As we see by everyone's comments there are a lot of variations on the smoke theme. I have found that simple exercises like this are great stress relief and good for the soul. Your process and post techniques have worked well.   Posted: 03/24/2023 16:32:46
