About the Image(s)

Good Friday evening saw me venture outside my immediate locale since I can remember, with the exception of my daily trip to work.I jumped on the train and made the 15 minute journey under the River Mersey to Liverpool waterfront to have a look at 11 art installations along the waterfront called River of Light the train was very quiet but as soon as I left the station it was quite busy and I must admit I felt rather unsettled but made my way to the back of the Museum of Liverpool and climbed the many steps to set up from the balcony (I have attached an image taken with my phone of the view I had) I was left on my own all evening which suited me fine, as always I got there early, about 40 minutes before sunset took several images of the Rainbow Bridge this is was the one I liked the best, the bridge was the brainchild of 4 artists from San Francisco and they came over from that city with the bridge. The bridge is 30feet high.
There were several photographers below me trying to take shots but I like to show the enviroment something is set in so this was my take on the scene, it was positioned with the Royal Albert Dock in the background which I thought would make a great backdrop.
I did not go and see the other 10 installations as I would have liked as it was getting quite busy and I felt safer to return to the station and home.

How I did it

Camera Canon EOS 5D Mark III Canon lens EF24-105mm f/4L IS USM f11 1s ISO 100 focal length 50mm camera attached to Manfroto tripod and remote trigger used mirror lock on.
RAW file opened and adjusted in photoshop sharpened using a high pass filter and a little dodging and burning, cropped slightly from the top, final touch a 2px stroke added

Ian, thanks for the detailed explanation of your process. Always appreciated. I can see that you gave much thought to the placement of your camera. From my experience the placement of the rainbow against the building with the crowd in the foreground is well done. To my eye the people could be brought out a bit more to add to the foreground strength. In the VF I placed your final into On1 Photo Raw, created a mask for the crowd, inverted the mask and then increased the exposure of the D/Log E curve about 50% above straight line position down near the toe. Let me know what you think. Thanks.   Posted: 04/07/2021 14:00:00

Hi Gary
As always the groups observations are very much appreciated,I was in 2 minds about the foreground I had lifted the foreground shadows a little to give an idea of the people as I wanted the Rainbow bridge to be the main subject but it is so strong in the picture I could well lift the shadows more as always this group gives me food for thought many thanks Gary.
As I side note I posted this image on my Instagram account #ianchant1304 and got a lovely message from from one of the four creators of the bridge who was extremely complimentary about the image which was so kind of him   Posted: 04/12/2021 16:58:09

I sent your picture to a friend of mine who lives in the UK and is a big Liverpool FC fan. She love the picture and passed it on to another friend of hers who lives in Liverpool. So you're getting some pretty wide distribution. All the best.   Posted: 04/12/2021 17:41:58

Ian, interesting image indeed, and the colorful rainbow frames the people. Your vantage point was very good. I like your PP which was improved by Gary, adding some light to the foreground. The double decker bus in the back on the right side (my right) gives the dimension for the area. I just wonder if the bridge is allegoric to the LGBTQ+ Pride   Posted: 04/12/2021 16:55:04

Hi Isaac
It may well be associated with LGBTQ but having posted the image on Instagram I got a lovely complimentary message from one of the 4 creators of the bridge saying that after a storm we often get a Rainbow then the sun shines so this was to symbolise light after the stormy 12 months we have all endured.   Posted: 04/12/2021 17:01:47

Ian, you have produced a good documentary image which has merit in its own right as an interesting picture. I agree with Gary that it would be good to lighten up the crowd in the centre to increase the foreground strength. On an unconnected note, I wonder how the creators of this 30 ft high rainbow managed to get it from San Francisco to Liverpool?   Posted: 04/13/2021 09:48:13

Hi Guy
Many thanks we are the only U.K.port used by Atlantic Container lines around 3 visits a week from the U.S.A. so I imagine it came courtesy of them.   Posted: 04/13/2021 15:28:12
