About the Image(s)

This was taken on 2nd January this year. Although we had had no snow so far this winter, we woke up to find a couple of inches of snow on the morning after New Year’s day. After breakfast we went out into our little town to see if there were any pictures to be found. Unfortunately the sky stayed overcast with featureless light grey cloud, and the snow started again. I was determined to get something so I took several shots as we walked around the town. This was only the fourth shot of the day and is taken from the west end of the town looking along the High Street. The original was very flat and uninteresting so, after cropping in ON1 RAW, I brightened it up overall and then used local adjustments on the buildings on either side of the street and on the road to bring out more detail. It is not in any way an exhibition image but more of a record of the day and of the times we are living in. Snow had started to fall when I took the shot, but not heavily enough to show up properly. However, if you see odd marks in the sky, they are out of focus snowflakes, not sensor dirt! For interest I have attached the original after cropping but before adjustment.

Camera was my Lumix G9 with the Leica 12-60 lens at 19 mm (38 mm full frame equivalent) Exposure was 1/160 sec at f/8 with ISO 200 and was hand held.

Guy, very nice city/town scape. Very sharp front to back (at f/8) the roadway works well as a leading line towards the back of the main street. The snow is still white and with no overexposed areas. Your PP brought out good colors. Also like how the branches of the trees on the left and right frame nicely the buildings.   Posted: 01/08/2021 06:12:57

Hi Guy
Isaac has very much echoed my thoughts on the image, you have done so well controling the whites, living in North Yorkshire as you do I would imagine you get some pretty heavy snow falls on the Wirral we see about 2 snowflakes very 10 years.
An image I very much enjoyed beautifully framed and composed well done.   Posted: 01/13/2021 11:31:59

An interesting townscape Guy. As Isaac mentioned, the curved road serves as a good leading line. Your vertical lines appear strait and the image displays good depth.   Posted: 01/23/2021 11:12:11

I'm jealous that you live in such a photogenic town. On the other hand I'm glad that my town isn't subjected to snowfalls. I love the composition though I would prefer a more interesting sky. Nowadays Photoshop lets you substitute other skies, though I have never tried it yet.   Posted: 01/26/2021 11:59:15

Hi Joe. Yes it is a lovely little town. I agree with you about the sky but the light was very flat and snow was starting to fall again so even if I tried to replace the sky, it would have to be overcast to match the flat light. I like your town too, and enjoyed photographing there on that occasion when we visited.   Posted: 01/26/2021 13:04:45
