Shaking a carpet in the Camargue by Joseph Hearst, FPSA, PPSA

September 2020 - Shaking a carpet in the Camargue

About the Image(s)

Every year Gypsies come to the Camargue district in the South of France. On a photo tour I took in France we went there, though I don’t think the leader knew much about them. But we happened on them on our way back from Sete to Marseilles. I was still using my Nikon D300, 1/100, f/10, ISO 400.

Wonderful rich colors. Interesting carvings on the benches. The caravan looks well maintained, not what I am used to seeing. I like that it shows a slice of life rather than a static portrait.   Posted: 09/07/2020 00:49:40

Joe, very colorful and photojournalistic image. Good light. Shows a seen of everyday life. Interesting how this wagon is so full of very carefully and good quality wood work with beautiful hardware and nicely maintained. Overall the gypsies (Romani people) are not well seen or welcome in most places since they have a reputation (unfortunately generalized) as truants and pickpockets. Good composition and the woman is nicely framed by the door/windows.   Posted: 09/07/2020 11:13:52

Hi Joe
Great spot and really well composed love the different angles of the windows and stable style door colours are warm and rich my favourite bit the kettle contrasts with all the warmer tones but sits so well in the picture great image.   Posted: 09/10/2020 14:15:22

Great colours and a nice little scene showing a little bit of housework. We have gypsies who come round with travelling fairs and my observation is that they are very houseproud, keeping their caravans (mobile homes) very clean and tidy. Image is sharp and well composed, with the action well caught.   Posted: 09/11/2020 03:54:03

Very nicely done photo. Excellent example of catching some street photography. Love the very well defined textures of the cabinetry, etc. and the bright colors of what I believe is the rug.   Posted: 09/13/2020 13:27:50

You captured the peak of the action Joe and the placement of your main subject on the canvas is perfect. The textures and color pallet create interest. The placement of the water kettle provides image balance.   Posted: 09/13/2020 23:16:31
