About the Image(s)

This image was taken in the summer of 2014 at Death Valley in the evening, yes it was very hot. Since I am not very athletic so I did not venture far, so this is close to the parking lot and it was hard to find something without a person. I did the usual adjustments in lightroom. It never did well in competition. I just now took into Nik and used color contrast range and white neutralizer. I think it was handheld.

Canon 5D Markiii Canon 24-70 f2.8

Vella, nice landscape with very contrasting colors from the foreground to the midground. I am not sure if the intense gold color of the sand is realistic and with the PP you lost the green of the vegetation as seen on the original image, unless this is the way it looks for the light conditions at that time of the day. Additionally, there is a bluish hue not seen in the original. Here I think that I would have given more emphasis to the ground vs ski like 2/3 to 1/3 of the frame. In your image you cropped it panorama like. I did differentt adjustment to the original and cropped as mentioned. Using the dehaze was able to give more details to the mountains, and the sand is more natural color. Of course, could not remove the footsteps in the sand.   Posted: 06/05/2020 09:04:03

Thanks for your comments. I was going for an evening look. Yes the footprints are distracting.   Posted: 06/05/2020 11:18:19

I think you did a wonderful job with the NIK products interpreting your vision. I thought of two adjustments. Crop some of the dull sky out of the picture to improve composition and add an 85 Warming Filter at about 33%   Posted: 06/06/2020 16:17:40

Thank you, I do like the warm color of the sand and more importantly I had forgotten about those filters in Photoshop. Thanks for reminding me.   Posted: 06/13/2020 12:25:14

I like the image but I do prefer Bills version. I'm not going to try it but I suspect that you could put a little more color into the sky to make it even nicer.   Posted: 06/06/2020 16:39:39

I have tried with more color but intend to get what I think is called posterizing. I did crop it more.   Posted: 06/13/2020 12:27:29

Vella, you have done a remarkably good job in post processing to get this result from such a low contrast and hazy original. It's a long time since I was there (1999) but I think Isaac is right about the colour of the sand. When I was there we went out at dawn but there were still fresh footprints in the dunes, even though there had been wind overnight which had wiped out the previous day's footprints!
Bill's suggestion of adding colour to the sky is good.   Posted: 06/07/2020 11:06:28

Hi Vella
You have a mound of suggestions so I am not going to add to them,I did think a crop down might help which Bill has done already the footprints do not bother me as everything can't look pristine all the time I would rather shoot things as they are because thats part of the memory they create.I actually like all versions, you have portrayed a very harsh enviroment really well.   Posted: 06/11/2020 15:11:28

Thank you, I have made some adjustments and the crop works well.   Posted: 06/13/2020 12:32:39

A pleasing landscape Vella, your subjects are properly placed
on your canvas and the image is well balanced. That said, I agree with Isaac's critique. In my opinion, the foreground should be lightened and attempt to bring out some green in the foliage by clicking on P.S.-image-adjustments-color balance.

Thanks to everyone for your help and most importantly to directing me to where the best places are to change something.

This is what I have come up with.   Posted: 06/16/2020 16:17:46
