Three balls, Casa Gilardi by Joseph Hearst, FPSA, PPSA

June 2018 - Three balls, Casa Gilardi

About the Image(s)

I just spent a week in Mexico City with a local guide. One place we visited was the Casa Gilardi, a house designed by Luis Barragan, a famous Mexican architect. Of course it is someone elseā€™s art, but I had to choose the framing.

A very eye-catching image Joe. The vertical bars, the balls and the floor tiles all demand inspection in their own right as well as being components of the composition as a whole. This is an image which I keep coming back to.   Posted: 06/03/2018 11:22:07

Last night a judge recommended that I crop the narrow yellow bar on the far right. What do you think?   Posted: 06/08/2018 10:08:34

It didn't really worry me. It shows continuity of the pattern on the wall.   Posted: 06/09/2018 04:56:50

Joe, great variation of shapes and colors. Sharp. Interesting composition, and as I said before, I agree with the judge on cropping the narrow yellow bar. Agree with Guy as well that the image calls for more careful inspection.   Posted: 06/08/2018 18:30:28

This is a very nice composition with the varying patterns. I'm not sure what that purple stuff is on the ground but it looks interesting. The shadows on the bars in the back really make the picture for me. When I first started looking at this picture at the beginning of the month, I wondered about the little sliver of the bar on the right so I agree with the judge.   Posted: 06/08/2018 19:39:31

Another good Joe original. The suggested crop doesn't bother me one way or the other. The image is sharp showing good color and the subjects are well placed on your canvas offering strong technicals as well.   Posted: 06/09/2018 10:51:02

Hi Joe
You said the composition is yours and for me its the composition is perfect as there is equal space on 3 sides of the image I would crop in slightly from the right taking out the narrow bar but its your call not mine.Textures look superb and the purple flecks on the floor and nearest orb just add a splash of colour against the browns but do not overpower like Guy something keeps drawing me back to this image   Posted: 06/10/2018 13:47:45
