April 2018 - Restful valley

About the Image(s)

How I did it—Three friends and I took a Fall trip to New England to photograph Fall color about 8 yrs. Ago. While in Vermont we ran into this restful valley that contained a farm house and colorful leaves. This shot was made off hand with my original Canon 7D and with an 18-270mm Tamron lens. The settings were 200 ISO, f16 to create proper depth of field, 250 th of a second for sharpness. If you all have the opportunity to experience this beautiful part of our country in the Fall by all means do it if you enjoy Fall color.

I've found myself staring at this photo inexorably (and that's today's nickel word of the day) off and on since it was posted. I really like how idyllic the setting is and how colorful the photo is from the foreground to the trees in the background. I like the partial framing of the leaves around the top half of the picture. Further I think the road presents a perfect curve leading the viewer's eyes into the photo itself. Someday when things get too stressful in my life, I'm going to remember this photo and how serene it is. The work put into this photo really shines through!   Posted: 04/01/2018 21:31:35

Erik, I want to go there, please send me the coordinates. This is a very peaceful and colorful image depicting fall. I love the composition and the shadows created by the late afternoon or early morning light. the roadway works as a leading line towards the house. The colorful branch at the top of the image, really frames the seen. It is very sharp, and the saturation is very good.   Posted: 04/06/2018 14:49:27

Isaac, this is the infamous Gray Farm in Vermont. If you do an internet search I'm sure you'll find lots of pictures and location. I too photographed it years ago. It's a New England Icon.   Posted: 04/08/2018 11:20:22

The classic Gray Farm in Vermont is hard to beat. The framing has been well done. As you know I can't resist tampering with the colors, I would push the colors in the trees. The road works well leading the viewers eye into the scene. Definitely a great iconic calendar shot.   Posted: 04/08/2018 11:25:48

Erik, for a moment when I looked at this image I thought you had been to England, until I took a closer look at the farm buildings! The colours are restful and the composition is great with the road leading the eye into the image. As Bill says, an iconic calendar shot. Should look good as a large print.   Posted: 04/09/2018 08:03:16

I can see why this is a famous location, and I really the enjoy the framing, with the leading line of the road and the branches at the top emphasizing the hills in the background but not merging with them. I would love to see a closer view and I assume that many people (including maybe you) have done it.   Posted: 04/09/2018 12:06:33

Hi Erik
You chose your spot so well the sweeping nature of the composition really allows the eye to travel throughout the image all points lead to the farmhouse it looks like the light was very contrasty yet all the tones are well handled detail in all the shadows I agree with Guy this would look fantastic in a calender,a superb landscape.   Posted: 04/19/2018 15:21:12
