Baby Sea Lion by Ruth Sprain

March 2019 - Baby Sea Lion

About the Image(s)

I took this photo in the Galapagos Islands in October 2018. The sea lions lounged on the beaches and rocks, often with their young babies. The big eyes of the babies made them so adorable. I used a Canon 7D at 1/250, f-8. In PhotoShop, I dodged and burned, then sharpened in Nik software.

What a terrific portrait. The only suggestion from me would be to darken the background and vignette it slightly!   Posted: 03/11/2019 16:33:38

Thanks for your comment, Mark. I did darken parts of the background in this image. In one version, I darkened the background too much, so that it looked too gray and heavy. Since the seal is so dark, I preferred the contrast of this lighter background.   Posted: 03/26/2019 21:33:44

The eyes of the baby sea lion have a big visual impact in this image, especially with some sand particles around them. I agree with Mark's comments that darken the background a bit would be best for the image.   Posted: 03/12/2019 09:07:52

Beautiful detail in the eyes and the fur! Great expression too. I find it cropped a little tightly at the bottom and would prefer to see the entire whiskers in the image.   Posted: 03/13/2019 15:06:28

Yes, more whiskers would be nice. I was captivated by the sea lion's eyes when I took the shot. Then he kept moving, so I just had one image with this much of a close-up.   Posted: 03/26/2019 21:37:34

Great capture. No suggestions.   Posted: 03/19/2019 14:02:35

This is a fun portrait. I also think the background is a bit bright. Maybe compose with the seal slightly higher in the frame to show more of it's neck and reduce background influence.   Posted: 03/31/2019 09:44:18

Such a cute sea lion! I like the idea Mark Southard had about vignetting. Other than that, great!   Posted: 03/31/2019 18:32:29
