Thinking at dawn by Harry M. Stuart

May 2020 - Thinking at dawn

About the Image(s)

We were waiting for the start of our osprey shoot in central Florida. I guess one of our party was thinking about whether he should go or not (my interpretation.)
Canon 70D, 1/80 sec, ISO 500, f5.

I really like the composition. The silhouette of the man lies nicely at the intersection of the "thirds" lines.
The background has a very "painterly" look about it and the treatment rubs out any distracting features that might detract from the silhouette.
There is a story to this image, although I have no idea what an "osprey shoot" is, we can tell from his pose that the man is contemplating something.
A lovely bright image. Well done.   Posted: 05/01/2020 23:42:19

Love this image. The composition and contrast of the silhouette against the orange sky are outstanding.

And, Martin, Ospreys are birds native to Florida and an Osprey shoot is when a group of photographers rent boats and go out over the waters they inhabit to photograph the birds. Did it a couple of years ago an if you're up to very early morning shoots, it can be a really fun day.   Posted: 05/02/2020 20:49:19

Thanks Beverley. My initial thought was that it might have been like the opening of the duck shooting season that we have here. I can rest easy now! Thank you.
.... and I don't do "very early morning shoots." I value my sleep too much, consequently there are very few, if any, sunrise images in my portfolio.   Posted: 05/02/2020 21:14:28

Thanks, Beverly, for the explanation. It was a late night when I originally posted and not in a mood to elaborate. Martin: Once a year (when there is no Wuhan virus) a group of us, through a camera club in Delray Beach FL, get together to drive 100 miles north to a lake where the Ospreys are known to nest. At dawn we embark on pontoons to get our shots of the birds. Martin - you can now rest.   Posted: 05/03/2020 07:21:16

A beautiful silhouette against the morning colors! I imagine that choosing the painterly finish took away from a possible busy background. Is the bridge on a tilt just slightly? No big deal if it is--because only the edge of the monitor showed it. I would like to see an osprey that you might have shot that morning with the sunrise and would love to do that myself.   Posted: 05/03/2020 14:17:07

The colors on this are gorgeous. I'm guessing "painterly" is an option from one of the software programs? Whatever the case, it looks like morning mist encircling the posts of the bridge. The figure on the bridge definitely appears to be contemplating something.   Posted: 05/07/2020 06:22:58

Unfortunately, my post-processing took place a while ago and I cannot remember the steps. But I probably used one of the NIK filters to obtain the effect.   Posted: 05/10/2020 11:46:14

Beautiful silhouetted shot. My eye wants to drift to the light sliver between the piling and the edge of the image on the left side. Perhaps consider a slight crop on that side. I love the painterly touches to the background.   Posted: 05/10/2020 10:22:50

I like the composition, balance and shades of reds progressing from top to bottom. He seems to be contemplating the stability of the bridge.....great that you completed the shoot without incident!   Posted: 05/11/2020 13:42:03
