10 on a Bike by Harry M. Stuart

January 2020 - 10 on a Bike

About the Image(s)

Taken in 2004 during a visit to China, I was able to get this shot of acrobats performing in a theater in Beijing. Surreptitiously, I might add - no photographs allowed. Camera was a Minolta Dimage 7i (long disposed of), 1/60 sec., ISO 200, f3.5. I remember cropping and cloning to eliminate audience seated in front of me and some other edits (long forgotten).

I know China is a crowed place, but nine people on a one wheeled cycle is ridiculous. How clever is that!
You did well to get such a sharp image of a moving target under such clandestine conditions.
I like the cropping and the fact they are headed towards the empty space on the right hand side of the image.
It is a lovely bright action shot taken under difficult conditions. Well done.   Posted: 01/06/2020 16:07:53

Thanks, Martin. It was actually 10 on the unicycle - the white legs on the pedals belong to the 'driver' who is hidden behind the front person in red.   Posted: 01/06/2020 16:49:49

Not bad for sneaking a photo!

The cropping is great, my only disappointment is that the guy in red is out of focus; I think that is the only thing that stands out to me as a negative. Other than that, I think this is a great shot.   Posted: 01/07/2020 10:26:03

I believe you have a nice balance (pun intended) with the yellows and the orange/reds against the stage left brown. I am brought into the image from either side with the theater graphics pointing to the people or the people leading me out the image via the graphics. Either way works for me. I do believe you might have gotten a sharper image of the people if your f-stop were different or if you had more time to play with your settings while HIDING your camera, but under the conditions I feel you got a great capture.   Posted: 01/07/2020 12:49:06

Nice photo. Other than some of it being out of focus I really like it. I think it would be much better if you cloned a few more people on the bike. Dan   Posted: 01/13/2020 07:54:47

I love this image. Brings back memories of my chip to China in the early 1990s. On my screen the dancers are a little soft so I brought it into Photoshop, opened Topaz Studio 2 and then utilized the sharpening tool to zap it once or twice. Added the finishing touch with a non destructive layer mask on the "fan" background to tone down the brightness just a touch to serve as a vignette. Hope you like it.   Posted: 01/13/2020 10:01:20
