About the Image(s)

This image was taken on our 30 adventure to the Canadian Maritime Provinces. We had just crossed the North Atlantic from North Sydney Nova Scotia on the seven hour ferry ride. We arrived in the late evening and we drove around the Southwestern tip of Newfoundland just to see the scenery. The sun was low and the white reflection of some buildings were obvious. I found this image as we were turning back to the motel. The small puffy cloud, the two white crosses (and note the seagull and stains on the steeples). I thought about all the chaotic distractions in the shot and said, "Well, too some, the state of the church could be expressed in this shot. However, the church is still a shining place that stands out and is still a welcoming place, regardless."
Some post processing was done in Lightroom Classic especially in removing dust spots and creating a greater contrast and the conversion to black and white. It was cropped very little. The shot was hand held using the 70-200mm Nikkor 2.8 lens.

Welcome, Jerry. If the intent of the image was to show the chaotic utility lines in front of the church, then I get it. However, the image is, in my opinion, overly contrasty. The large black area in the lower left is distracting and there is no detail that can be discerned. Additionally, I think that there is too much sky and some cropping is in order.   Posted: 10/11/2018 14:49:39

The first thing I noticed was the dark feeling of this shot. Then I thought about the lines going everywhere. But what I can't unsee is a face on the church. The 2 windows looks like eyes and below is the mouth. The church face seems concerned about all of the chaos.   Posted: 10/12/2018 10:54:52

Laurie -- Thanks for seeing the "eyes." This piece can have so many feelings. It is an interpretive piece of "Dark vs. Light" "Chaos vs. Calm" (the calm being the floating cloud above it all). Thanks for your comment.   Posted: 10/12/2018 13:09:07

Although in my opinion, the confusion of wires keeps me from getting a good feeling when viewing the image, it certainly has a story to tell. Almost like the insect caught in the middle of a spider web. Since I don't believe the clouds at the top are strong enough to add to the image, I would suggest that you crop the sky just above the top wire. To me you would have a great starting angle of the wires zigzagging through the image. I'm not sure what is in the lower left. If it is a bush, I think it might help to decrease the shadows on it.

The lower left corner is actually a dark shingled roof on a house, I wish it were a bush. I don't think the image was meant to give a "good feeling" the idea was about confusion. For me, the cloud is a peaceful feeling or calming presence. From a judging point of view is it about the technical or about the emotion? That is the rub for any judge or photographer/artist. Thank you for your comments.   Posted: 10/14/2018 10:27:10

Thanks Hung. It's definitely not a "feel-good" image. It was in the golden hour, in a new place where I have never been. It does evoke emotional responses. A photography instructor, friend of mine, said the following about this image, "To my mind, this juxtaposition sets up a disturbing contrast or tension between the serenity of a spiritual setting and the clutter of urban modernization."   Posted: 10/15/2018 17:25:52

Me too,I felt emotional when I see your picture in B/W.The light of the church and two Crosses has some feelings of serenity...that cannot explain...   Posted: 10/15/2018 17:47:12

Did I see your name on an image about "walking on a salt field" or something like that?   Posted: 10/15/2018 17:54:21
