About the Image(s)

I often spend a lot of time roaming around the countryside looking for deserted homesteads and the ghost towns. The Colorado Prairie is full of these things – – especially deserted homesteads. I found this one in Northern Colorado near a farm community. I thought that the grass foreground and the trees framed the old home quite well. While this is certainly not a competition image, it represents part of the heritage of the state and I just enjoy looking at it. I set the home in the center to be framed by the grass, trees, and silo. Post-processing was pretty simple with cropping and enhancing the detail and saturation. I shot it with a Canon 5D Mark III, F 10, 1/200 of a second, at ISO 100.

A very quaint cottage which shows its age. I do see a couple of (to my eye) improvements. Although you said that the grass is part of the framing, I think that there is too much foreground, a little less tree on the right along with some darkening, and the removal of the silo on the left along with the building in the background. The viewer does not know that the leftmost building is a silo and appears to me to be a distraction. I have attached my suggestions and you may quite rightly disagree with them.   Posted: 07/09/2017 14:05:54

Al, this is a beautiful capture telling a story of the past. I agree with Harry that unless you had told us, I would not have realized that was a silo. Although it's a beautiful tree, I think that it is fighting for the center of interest. I like the way Harry cropped the image. The color combination of beautiful sky and contrast of grass and home are very pleasing to my eye. Good capture of history that I could see hanging in a museum.   Posted: 07/09/2017 15:23:00

Great capture. Though centralizing the house is not looking the best option to me as well. I am liking Harry's cropping from the FG but I would like to keep the tree on the right as in the original. Agree with others that the silo is a distraction. Else the details, the color, the lighting are all very apt.
Good work indeed!   Posted: 07/17/2017 12:55:31
