Yellowtail by Sharon Moir

November 2019 - Yellowtail

About the Image(s)

This was taken at a garden off the Harlem River in Manhattan. It mostly required patience waiting for the butterfly to stay still long enough. Afterwards, it was simply cropped and darkened a bit.

I really like the image. I took the opportunity to work it a bit. I cropped about a third off the top and right. That got rid of the bright green in the right lower background. I then darkened the white a bit as well as the background. This helped accentuate the near foliage. I then used a yellow dodge brush to lighten the yellow in the butterfly plus some of the foliage and a blue dodge to the lower part of the butterfly wings.   Posted: 11/10/2019 18:55:35

Neal and David have a couple of good ideas. Fine image showing your patience paid off.   Posted: 11/17/2019 17:27:13

Well, I guess I might as well suggest the cropping too. I don't think that I would have gone as far as as Dave's suggestion. I probably would just cropped off the bright green and the dark column above it. It seems like I have been playing around with the vignettes this month so I had to try it here. It is a good shop. It's too bad that the butterfly's tend to get so beat up late in the season.   Posted: 11/18/2019 18:14:39

Good shot. I like Dennis' cropping, but I love your diagonal composition. I know how hard it is to get these to be still long enough to focus on them.   Posted: 11/19/2019 17:15:48
