Dead Tree and Rock by David Robb

October 2018 - Dead Tree and Rock

About the Image(s)

Nikon D7000, iso/200, 1/350, 200mm, f/6.7. Tripod.

My unusual shot at Smith Rock, Oregon.

I had just hiked the Scout Loop trail and thought I would buzz over to Smith Rock afterwards to get some final hour pics in. I was shooting the usual scenic territorial photos when I noticed this tree. it caught my attention I then decided to zoom in and see if there was any potential there. Kind of. I liked the shadows of the rocks among the limbs depicting birds I thought.
I just picked up on whats odd about this picture. The tree looks like a shadow against the rocks but the tree is actually in the shade, no shadow.

Unusual subject. The loss of definition in the lower right bothers me a bit. The tree splits the image in the center. Could it have been placed a bit to one side or another?   Posted: 10/12/2018 10:55:29

Possibility though I was on a ledge above the canyon and the two subjects were pretty close together.   Posted: 10/26/2018 14:37:23

David--very interesting image! I'm quite fond of shadows (I realize that it's a silhouette not a shadow) but I've never shot anything like this one. Love the color! If you had it to do over, and I realize that you will never see this again, I would have advised a step or two to the right, so that the tree doesn't merge with the strong vertical shadow to the right. Otherwise, good capture!   Posted: 10/12/2018 11:37:13

Good comment. No, I'll be back and will taker a closer look at the tree if it's still standing. Probably in the spring.   Posted: 10/26/2018 14:40:22

The silhouette works well against the great detail of the rock.It does look a little dark on my screen. I also wish the tree didn't split the rock so evenly. Good eyes to find this.   Posted: 10/14/2018 13:14:05

Interesting contrast. I like how you captured the texture of the rock and that the tree is totally silhouetted. It might even be good in black and white.   Posted: 10/22/2018 12:18:18

I thought that this was a shadow when I first looked at it. I don't mind the composition with the tree in the center. The framing on the sides seem to work for me. I would rather not have the large shadow on the rock since it combines with the silhouette.   Posted: 10/22/2018 19:23:48
