About the Image(s)

Nikon D7000, iso/200, 24mm, f/11, 1/400.

I ‘m heading north up Johnstone strait. Around Vancouver Island is my itinerary and about 1/2 way through it. Actually I took this picture from Johnstone strait but I think I’m looking east off the starboard side towards Forward Harbor and Douglass bay. Nice country and I like the shot as the clear cuts don’t show up. It is a patch work quilt but still beautiful.

This image makes me feel the immensity of the space, and implicitly communicates the smallness of the photographer alone in his vessel. Good luck on your journey !

One odd thing: The small island at the center appears to be doubled or accompanied by its shadow. A multiple exposure? A photographed optical illusion ?   Posted: 07/10/2017 11:29:53

I'll take a look but I think it is another island.   Posted: 07/20/2017 16:48:49

Yes, beautiful and you're lucky to be getting there. I'd dampen the highlights in the water and sky and add a vignette to the sky. The image shows what great part of the world that is.   Posted: 07/10/2017 21:13:11

I like the way you used the lower camera angle. It really emphasizes the texture in the water. I might have tried cropping off the bare sky at the top to make this more of a panorama. I think that portion of the sky draws too much attention away for the various formations in the lower portion of your image.   Posted: 07/17/2017 15:19:52

I agree with to much sky. It doesn't really add anything. Now that I have thought about it. I was trying to get the ocean line out of the middle of the photo which Sam did but lost the detail of the water in the fore ground so the original still works for myself. It was like water, mountain-sky, blue sky. I might of over thought that rule too. 1/3rd's.   Posted: 07/20/2017 16:51:40

For me, this is more like a documentary shot or a snap shot. I don't find it particularly interesting. Nevertheless, from the composition standpoint, it begs to be a panorama shot.   Posted: 07/19/2017 10:22:07

A beautiful place to be. I would take out some of the sky and go more for a panorama, or crop the sides a bit also and make it tighter. I have shots like this where I have tried to capture the amazing views of water and land, but they are hard to make as dramatic as they felt when I was there.   Posted: 07/19/2017 11:49:47

Reminds me of a trip up to Alaska as a child. I had a camera at the time and had a lot of pictures of areas that I could not identify. Not very dramatic.   Posted: 07/21/2017 13:09:05
