Spider and Ant by Neal R. Thompson, M.D.

July 2017 - Spider and Ant

About the Image(s)

Yesterday I went to a trail in the hills above Ashland and took a series of macro shots. Actually, I did not use my macro lens but rather a Tamron 18-200 mm. This image was 200 mm 1/320 sec at f/13; ISO 500. Sony ILCE-6300. I watched the spider quite a while. It was just teasing the ant. This
image was cut down to 1/2 original size. The color in the ant was enhanced a little and some sharpening. Should I have cut out even more?

An ominous confrontation. It feels like you caught the moment just before the deadly action commences. I did some cropping to keep the focus on the drama.   Posted: 07/10/2017 11:37:03

Dramatic. Odd how the spider is upside down...waiting to prance. Good eyes to see this and great use of your equipment to capture it.   Posted: 07/10/2017 21:04:15

I agree with Lee. It does remove a lot of the unnecessary background including most of the out of focus leaf that partially covers the ant. I would probably try to decrease the contrast. I usually use Levels for this but you would have more control if you used Curves for this. I am curious if that is an ant leg halfway between the spider shadow and the ant?   Posted: 07/17/2017 08:32:07

Interesting image. May be a little bit oversaturaded green and it's overpowering. May be the insects are too far from each other and they are too small to make a stronger impact.   Posted: 07/19/2017 10:01:44

This is pretty intense. I wish the leaf in front of the ant was not there, but one can't go back.   Posted: 07/19/2017 11:39:20

I think I would of cut some more out and moved to the left so all of the ant is in the photo.   Posted: 07/20/2017 16:31:37
